Jul. 8th, 2011 10:40 amWhy do I think that Kennedy Center performances are "local"? I have to spend nearly as much time* getting to one of them as I do getting to a NYC performance!
I'm preparing to justify my bailing on going to the Next to Normal matinée tomorrow despite the show getting stellar reviews.
In order to get to Kennedy Center even briefly in advance of a 1:30 show, I have to get on the Metro at noon. This means I have to leave the house by about 11:15 in order to drive to the Metro station, park, and walk half of forever to get to the trains.
Then the show itself is just over 2 hrs 15 min. So by the time I get out of the theatre, it's somewhat after 4 PM. Catching the shuttle back to metro probably gets me there around 4:30 (optimistic, I know). I'd get back to my metro station around 5:45 PM and home around 6:30.
Seven hours, and only 2 hrs 15 min is actual show. (And it really should be 7.5 hrs. I should catch an earlier train than the one at noon if I want a prayer of getting on a shuttle and getting to Kennedy Center before 1:30. Even if the penalties for being late wouldn't be as severe as they would have been if I'd been late to Strathmore.)
Need I mention that it's also going to be 90+ degrees (Fahrenheit) and humid? This is July in DC, after all. Oh, and the escalators are out at both metro stations.
I think I'm going to stay home and clean house tomorrow. I bought and paid for this ticket so long ago that it doesn't even seem like it's costing me money to bail on the show.
*(Okay, going to NYC is about 14 hrs and only 2.5 of that is show, but still... )
